We were asked to dispel the popular belief that Volvo makes nothing but boring, safe cars driven by smarty pants and do-gooders. So we created an integrated campaign to tell the story of Volvo's suite of innovation sub-brands Drive-E, Intellisafe and Sensus led by a series of car commercials featured no car. Counterintuitive, I know.

the future of the luxury suv

The all-new Volvo XC90 is the most important car in Volvo's history. The future of the company literally depends on the success of this new model. So in preparation of this monumental launch, Volvo asked us to craft a North American version of the global XC90 launch site. My partner and I creative directed a freelance team through a full re-write of the site as well as the creation of an online banner campaign to support it. In fact, through the website, we helped sell out the 1,927 XC90 First Edtions in a record 48 hours.

HELLO, AGAIN: THE FILMS

The Lincoln Motor Company is no stranger to re-imaginations, having said hello, again to design, technology and the American way of life for more than ninety years. To tell this historic tale we paid visit to the Lincoln archives and spent hours scouring their back catalog of print and film adverts, Ford family letters, design sketches and more. The result, a short film and a TV spot that tells the birth, demise and rebirth of the great Lincoln Motor Company.

Humble brag: Shortly after airing, Edsel Ford II mailed a hand-written letter to the Lincoln CMO saying this was the best ad Lincoln had made in many, many decades — and it was how his grandfather Edsel would have wanted his brand's story told.

An epic collaboration between The Lincoln Motor Company and Aloe Blacc

We reimagined the traditional music video, coinciding with and reinforcing Lincoln's own reimagining. The Flash-based interactive player let viewers seamlessly swap perspectives to follow the journey of four unique, yet converging storylines. Filmed in a single-take, the spatially recorded sound gave viewers the ability to step inside a richly textured environment in the first person.

WALK HARD

A 30-second promo for our aloe blacc interactive FILM and the public debut of the first-ever lincoln mkc crossover. Because of the last-minute nature of the Aloe Blacc interactive film, we had to get creative with this promo. And creative we got. We cast a beautiful, confident actress to play the director and followed her through the closed set of our "Standards" TV spot to her awaiting Lincoln MKC. So meta.

A tactical piece of work that pokes some fun

We helped wrap up #LuxuryUncovered, a campaign in which car-buying couples interviewed the MKZ and its competitors. In this 30-second spot an awkward couple asks the MKZ and the new Cadillac CTS which has more standard features. What they really uncover is that the CTS is kind of a tool.

Then disaster struck. After a fumbled launch riddled with production and supply issues, the all-new Lincoln MKZ was finally ready for its national debut. To celebrate the occasion, we created a series of conceptual print layouts that ran in Vanity Fair, New York Times, Wall Street Journey, Automobile, Car & Driver and other lifestyle publications.

RE-IMAGINE A 90-YEAR-OLD AMERICAN LUXURY CAR COMPANY

A brief like this comes along once in your career, twice if you're lucky. Our small, but nimble team took the challenge. We relaunched Lincoln, a brand adored by geriatrics and gypsy cab drivers, as the Lincoln Motor Company, a refreshingly new company hell bent on respecting the individuality of its clients. In December of 2012, we launched the new brand alongside the all-new 2013 Lincoln MKZ in national TV, print, digital, OOH and experiential mediums spanning some of the world’s largest stages.

90 YEARS WERE ONLY THE BEGINNING

You tend to learn a lot over the better part of a century. What works. What doesn’t. You’re afforded a unique opportunity to explore the possibilities and pioneer brave new ideas. It’s a lifetime for some. For us, the past 90 years were only the beginning.

 

ALLOW US TO REINTRODUCE OURSELVES

Edsel Ford knew something about building a fine automobile: That you don’t create a great luxury car by beginning with that intention. Instead, he simply built a car that he would want to drive. This is how Lincoln started. It’s how we’ll become great again.

Starting with a new design studio, four disarmingly fresh models over the next four years, and a new focus on the most important part of the car: You, the driver. We’ve reinvented the wheel, by placing you at its center.
